Print The Obit: Time Has Run Out For Liberals
Canadian actor Rick Moranis was walking in New York City last week when, out of the blue, he was sucker-punched by a young black man who quickly made himself scarce. Moranis was injured in what has become a common tactic of militant groups who choose innocent white victims to blame for the Don Lemon Manifesto of guilt.
Almost as fast as the assailant’s escape was the disappearance of the story from the blue-check media. The brutal, uncalled-for assault on a celebrity liberal— and its aftermath— is a perfect distillation of the hapless state of gentrified liberalism in North America.
With the U.S. election a month away Hollywood liberals have again begun sending out tweets advertising their intention to move to Canada if Donald Trump wins again. In 2016, Bryan Cranston, Barbra Streisand, Chloe Sevigny, Josh Gadd and Lena Dunham— among many— declared their intention of deserting the U.S. over Trump’s win.
Naturally, none did. And naturally, there’s now a new wave of blue checks promising to escape any 2020 Trump presidency. Media outlets are helpfully giving them instructions on escaping to The Great White North.
Of course, these brave patriots won’t go anywhere should Trump somehow prevail. Because that’s what liberals do. The pose is greater than the deed. Intention triumphs follow-through. Groupthink supplants individual expression. That’s why so many actors are liberal. They’re poseurs. Their promises to leave the country melt like the snow (which, BTW Babs doesn’t happen till April in Canada) when it comes time to back up the brave talk.
How do you know if you’re a liberal? You’re a liberal if you give at the office but take off at the first sign of commitment. You’re at a party, and you say, “I don’t know anyone who’s voting for Trump/ O’Toole. Do you?” You’re a liberal if you think it’s okay for Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot to break quarantine to get a haircut or Nancy Pelosi to get her hair styled — while everyone else is forbidden to do so.
You think The Man is hiding evidence that will exonerate Jussi Smolett. You’re a liberal if you think watching Schitt’s Creek makes you a clever person.. And finally, you’re a liberal if you believe Jane Fonda has anything to say.
None of this is new. For decades, liberals have been happy to stand back and mouth platitudes while others did the heavy lifting. You could be certain that the radical left would go into the streets or the conservative right defend their words with actions like electing Trump. But there has never been a position a liberal couldn’t escape. Like, when Diversity Man Justin Trudeau was found to have worn blackface on numerous occasions— after haranguing the middle class about racial insensitivity.
Justin Trudeau’s Daddy famously went from “the government should stay out of the nation’s bedrooms” to busting down bedroom doors to get political enemies. American liberals went from pro-family/ law & order under Bill Clinton and Barack Obama to sending bail to spring the “peaceful protesters” who burned down a Minneapolis police station.
There has always been a pool of voters willing to forgive the vanity act and buy into whatever memes that Joe Biden is shopping this election season. Just like old times. But while the chattering class has been vilifying Trump they’ve missed the own obituary. Time has run out for liberals.
Liberalism as practiced today is deader than Tutankhamen. When they’re not planning escapes to Canada, American liberals think they’ve achieved a sweet deal, using the radical left to subdue Trump while centrist Joe Biden waltzes to victory. The theory being that once Biden is in the White House it’ll be tools down for the radicals and the Swamp will rise again.
But for Bernie Sanders, it’s fool me once, shame on you, Fool me twice, a pox on you. The notion that, having sniffed their power in deposing Trump, antifa and #BLM will melt away, leaving a Harris/ Biden… er, Biden/ Harris administration to do old-time politics is deranged. The peace deal that Sanders did with the DNC to elect Biden is going to mean all AOC, all the time.
Trump was easy pickings. A riot here, a burning there, was all it took to get the ecstatic media singing their song of #OrangeManBad. When the Woke Climate Chorus and the Civil War reparations bunch come knocking on the DNC door Biden will find himself pushed aside like Lenin sidelined Kerensky. You think not?
Then read ex-Twitter CEO Dick Costolo who talks about “me-first capitalists” being “the first people lined up against the wall and shot in the revolution… I’ll happily provide video commentary.” Sounds conciliatory, no?
Canadian liberals might not notice the change quite as dramatically. That’s largely because the Kings of Smug surrendered to the radical left years ago when the Ralph Goodale Libs gave the keys to Prince Justin. Trudeau has surrounded himself with Woke activists and climate zealots bound on creating a progressive socialist nirvana.
If you’re looking for grownups such as John Turner, Donald MacDonald, Bob Rae or Paul Martin you’re as dated as Facebook.
Freed from icky responsibilities such as Canada’s defence, Canada’s liberals are hellbent on a climate dreamworld. To solidify his Green bonafides Trudeau is now incorporating the floundering NDP into his new party, outflanking (for the time being) the Greens.
Enervated Canadian liberals huddled in Ottawa sneer about America’s abrasive politics. They look down their nose, never understanding that the fractious Yanks actually have a pulse. This gave/ take is a source of great mirth for Canadian liberals at home and working in U.S. media. It also keeps them from seeing how China has made Canada a client state to launder their business.
Canadian liberalism is a cadaver, waiting for the embalmer to finish the job. American liberalism is not far behind. The radical left is on the move— and it won’t be pretty.
