Hunka's Heroes: Trudeau's Inept Liberals Humiliate Canada. Again.
Everyone’s a Nazi to Libs, except actual Nazis. Weird.” @dbongino
We concluded last week’s column saying, “The Right’s challenge is thinking their critics will respond to shame or being corrected. Can't be done. Won't be done. They're like Japanese soldiers fighting WW II on a deserted island 25 years after armistice. They’ll go to the graves thinking Trump was guilty of Russian collusion.”
No sooner had that idea dropped than the current Trudeau government delivered another master class in willful obfuscation. Before we play Hide The Nazi, consider the current bill de fair for the Liberals in the past month.
PMJT’s abysmal performance in India, lecturing a nation about its foreign policy and accusing it of murdering questionable Sikhs in Canada who’ve slipped through his citizenship net.
2) A blatant challenge to its authority from Alberta which is claiming up to 50 percent of the assets of the Canada Pension Plan so it can start its own plan.
3) Ground-penetrating radar revealed no evidence of dead Rez babies in Manitoba.
4) Muslim-Canadian voters— who’ve supported Liberals in the past— send a scorching press release over Skippy’s supporting radical #Trans policy separating parents from decisions on children’s transition.
5) Revival of viral infections being used to justify returns to masking, vaxxing and closing schools.
6) Plummeting polls that show the Liberals will be fricasseed by the Conservatives in the next federal election. It only awaits the NDP giving Skippy back his engagement ring.
That’s a full agenda, but God Bless this Liberal government, they can find a way to make things worse. Much worse.
Enter 98-year-old Alberta resident Yaroslav Hunka. As the world knows now, he was a Ukrainian member of the Waffen SS during WW II who was spirited into Canada after the war along with many of his ilk. (Considering the power of Canada’s Ukrainian community, don’t expect a Liberal inquiry anytime soon into how this happened.) Having had his identity obscured for 70 years the Libs no doubt thought he’d be the perfect guy to honour the House of Parliament visit of Ukraine shakedown/ camo star Vladimir Zelensky.
As #SNL said, Bad Idea Jeans. The dastardly Americans, now slowly smelling a cash-cow rat, had earlier told Mr. Z (richer by $113B) that he could not address Congress this time. He was left to shake hands with Biden, who likely thought Zelensky was there to repair the White House air conditioning. But in the True North Strong & Free, the entire gullible HoC applauded Hunka liked trained monkeys when directed to do so by Speaker Anthony Rota. For a moment it was Compassionate Canada on the march.
Canada’s virtue display lasted about as long as it takes a Liberal MP to say Honk Honk/ Heil Hitler. Hunka’s unit was quickly exposed as a murderer of Jews, Poles, Slovaks and many others. So Team Trudeau did what it does best. Pass the buck. Blame others. Liberal House Speaker Karina Gould, herself a Jew, was designated as the whitewash queen, saying her beloved leader didn’t/ couldn’t/ wouldn’t have known the truth. It was all the fault of Rota, the Liberal MP for Nippissing, who should have warned them. Unanswered in this was who vetted the ancient Nazi.
Gould did all this dissembling while sitting beside deputy PM Chrystia Freeland, granddaughter of a Ukrainian Nazi publisher in WWII and niece of some dude who gave glowing speeches about Hunka’s wartime regiment to approving audiences . She knew, but she instead led the cheering. It might have been the most humiliating moment in CDN parliamentary history— after Skippy's emergency measures debate in 2022, that is.
This flimsy Liberal firewall quickly collapsed. So PMJT was forced to make unctuous word salads about how he himself shouldn’t be blamed, and the Speaker, while ill advised, could keep his job. “The independent Speaker of the House has apologized and accepted full responsibility for issuing the invitation and for the recognition in Parliament. This was the right thing to do.” Security checks, harumph, harumph. Buck stops elsewhere. Don’t look at me.
In all the bowing and scraping PMJT never apologized to Canadians, Ukrainians or anyone else he’d sideswiped with his gambit till the next Wednesday. That worked for a while with the docile Canadian press which offered up equivocations and alibis for Hunka. “He was a conscript.” “How do we know he murdered anyone?” “You have to understand the times.” (These are the same Rez School banshees who destroyed statues of Canada’s first PM and tore the name of Egerton Ryerson off a university because today’s standards are eternal when applied to pet liberal causes from more than a century ago.)
Eventually the international press weighed in with damning condemnations of Nazi sympathy. Here’s American journalist Michael Shellenberger warming to the task: “Justin Trudeau says he's deeply compassionate, but he's not. He smeared ordinary Canadians as Nazis. He froze the bank accounts of critics of his Covid policies. And he spread disinfo while demanding censorship. It's time to talk about the malignant narcissism of Justin Trudeau.”
Here’s Matt Vespa in Townhall: “Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the incident a national embarrassment, which would have sufficed. He later went off on a tangent about how the country should be guarded against Russian disinformation or something. The latter had nothing to do with the public relations fiasco that prompted Trudeau’s response.”
And Glenn Grunwald on Substack: “It's obviously shocking that Trudeau, Zelensky and the entire Canadian Parliament gave a standing ovation to a Nazi SS soldier. But it's not surprising. The last decade, Western political and media circles warned Nazism was dominant in Ukraine, especially among its fighters.”
Indeed, Russia is busting a gut that Canada has inadvertently shown the world that, as Putin claims, Ukraine does harbour real live Nazis. (The raving Loony Liberal member who equated Honk Honk with Heil Hitler was struck dumb suddenly). Poland is now demanding an apology from Canada over the standing ovation given to the Nazi in the Canadian Parliament under Trudeau's watch.
Such is the disgust of Canadians whose loved ones were killed by real Nazis, not TrudeauNazis, that the second fallback position wouldn’t do. So a select few Libs and NDP leader Jagmeet Singh demanded Rota’s resignation as speaker. Displaying his keen sense of leadership, Trudeau then avoided Question Period for two days. Poor Rota, who didn’t know what hit him, dutifully fell on his sceptre.
Even that levee seems about to break as the Conservatives have refused to expunge the entire incident from Hansard. What they want to preserve is the Liberals’ transparent HoC fellating of Zelensky, meant to bring honour to Trudeau and his faculty-lounge cabinet as they shovelled more dough at the Camo King to fight off the Ruskies. It did the opposite.
But any thought that the Woke folk will take a lesson from using into this fiasco should save their breath. No one of import is going to be fired. No one holding cabinet office will be replaced. They cannot, because these people feel imbued with righteousness. Like Obama, they think the arc of history will bend to them because they’re good people. If Anthony Rota or the nation of Ukraine get their hair singed, it’s a bug, not a feature, in their perfection.
It’s why foreign affairs minister Monique Joly, without irony, can still be prattling on at the UN about pursuing online “Nazis” even while her own party entertains real Nazis in Parliament.
